Don Carlos is a grand opera in five acts, composed by the prolific Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), to a French libretto by Joseph Méry and Camille du Locle.
It was based on the tragedy 'Don Carlos, Infant von Spanien' by the German playwright Friedrich von Schiller and was premiered on March 11th, 1867, at Salle Le Peletierthe—the home to the Paris Opera from 1821 until 1873.
