After celebrating eighty years since it opened its doors to the public through the two exhibitions "privately Impressionists" and "Impression, Sunrise", the Marmottan Monet Museum presents from February 12 to July 5, 2015 the first exhibition ever dedicated to the theme of the Toilet named "La toilette, Naissance de l'intime".
The exhibition brings together works by major artists of the fifteenth century to the present, about the rituals of cleanliness, their spaces and their gestures. This is the first time such a subject, unique and indispensable, is presented in the form of exposure. In these works that reflect everyday practices that might seem mundane, the public will discover the pleasures and surprises with a depth slightly expected.
One hundred paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs and motion pictures ("chronophotographs") allow to offer an exceptional course.
In the second part of the exhibition, visitors will discover how the nineteenth century witnessed a profound renewal of tools and modes of cleanliness. The appearance of the bathroom, from which emerges a deep impression of intimacy and modernity.
The last section of the exhibition displays to visitors images of modern bathrooms at a time familiar and disconcerting and "functional" , with Pierre Bonnard, areas where it is allowed, away from the eyes of other and noise of the city, to give up and dream.
Guests staying at one of Les Grands Hotels Parisiens are lucky enough to be not so far from the museum. They can enjoy this very nice exhibition that shows us how our relationship with "toilet" and preparations has evolved over time from a public toilet in a private toilet and intimate, coquine, and finally relaxation and pleasure. The works mix genres for our enjoyment.
